What Is Live Rosin? The Solventless Extract Behind TIKI

Live rosin is a solventless cannabis extract made from fresh-frozen flower with heat and pressure. Here's how it's made and why it tastes different.

Live rosin, in one sentence

Live rosin is a cannabis extract made from fresh-frozen flower using nothing but ice water, heat and pressure. No solvents, no chemistry set, no shortcuts. It is one of the purest ways to capture what a cannabis plant actually tastes and smells like, and it's the heart of every can of TIKI.

That sentence packs in a lot, so let's unpack it.

Why "live"?

In cannabis, "live" means the plant was frozen right after harvest instead of being dried and cured. Drying is the traditional route, and it works well for flower you plan to smoke. But drying also lets many of the plant's most delicate aromatic compounds, its terpenes, slowly evaporate. Some studies of curing suggest a meaningful share of a plant's volatile aroma can be lost along the way.

Freezing the flower at harvest locks those compounds in place. The result is an extract that tastes closer to the living plant: brighter, fruitier, more complex. If you've ever smelled a cannabis garden in full bloom, that's the profile live rosin is chasing.

How live rosin is made

Making live rosin is a craft, and it happens in a few careful steps.

1. Harvest and freeze. Flower is cut at peak ripeness and frozen within hours. No drying, no curing.

2. Wash into ice water hash. The frozen flower goes into a vessel of ice-cold water and is gently agitated. The cold makes the plant's resin glands, called trichomes, brittle, so they snap off the plant. Those trichomes hold the cannabinoids and terpenes.

3. Sift and dry. The water is filtered through a series of fine mesh bags that sort the trichome heads by size. What's left is ice water hash, which is then carefully freeze-dried.

4. Press. Finally, the hash is wrapped in a fine filter and pressed between two heated plates. Gentle heat and steady pressure squeeze out a golden, sticky oil. That oil is live rosin.

That's it. Water, cold, heat and pressure. At no point is the plant material dissolved in butane, propane, ethanol or CO2.

How it differs from distillate and other extracts

Most of the cannabis extracts on the market are made with solvents. Butane hash oil and many "live resin" products use hydrocarbons to strip compounds from the plant. Those solvents are then purged out, but the process starts with chemistry rather than mechanics.

Distillate takes things further. It usually starts from dried, cured plant material that's extracted with a solvent and then refined again and again through distillation until almost everything except THC is gone. The result is potent and consistent, but it's also flat. Distillate has very little natural flavor or aroma of its own, which is why distilled products often get terpenes or flavorings added back in afterward.

Live rosin goes the opposite direction. Instead of refining the plant down to a single compound, it keeps as much of the original plant as possible.

Why full-spectrum matters for flavor and aroma

"Full-spectrum" means an extract keeps a broad range of what the plant naturally makes: THC plus minor cannabinoids, and the terpenes that give each cultivar its personality. Think of it like the difference between fresh-squeezed juice and a sugar-water drink with a fruit flavor added. Both might be sweet, but only one tastes like the real thing.

For a drink, flavor matters a lot. A seltzer is something you sip and savor. Full-spectrum live rosin brings its own character to the glass, so the cannabis complements the fruit instead of fighting it.

Why TIKI uses live rosin

We started TIKI because we wanted a cannabis drink that tasted as good as the experience we were after. Distillate was the easy choice. Live rosin was the right one.

Our rosin comes from Emerald Triangle inputs, the legendary Northern California growing region known for generations of craft cultivation. Pairing that flower with a solventless process means every can starts with ingredients we're proud to put our name on.

Mango Yuzu is available now with 25mg THC per 12 fl oz can, 3 servings · 8.35mg each, and solventless Emerald Triangle live rosin. Whitethorn Rose is coming soon with 100mg THC per 16 fl oz can and strain-specific solventless live rosin in partnership with John Casali of Huckleberry Hill Farms in Southern Humboldt.
